A Art Space: A Modern Art Museum Expressing Tibetan Culture

Restructuring Tibetan Culture with Contemporary Design

We have deep feelings for Tibetan culture. To have a dialogue with the world, Tibetan culture needs a space with modern aesthetic feeling. As designers and investors of the project, we have the responsibility to do it well and express Tibetan culture in a contemporary aesthetic way. The inspiration of the project comes from the mysterious and ancient Tibetan culture and Western modernist design style, and the design combines the two.

Tibetan culture is a mysterious culture that has been rarely deconstructed. However, the A Art Space project aims to restructure Tibetan culture and present it in a modern and contemporary way. Located in Lhasa, Tibet, this project is a fusion of modern design techniques and traditional Tibetan culture, resulting in a modern art museum that beautifully showcases the rich heritage of Lhasa.

The design team, led by Yinglong Xu, carefully selected and redesigned the most representative traditional Tibetan architectural elements, such as windows and brackets. Through contemporary architectural design and composition, these elements are deconstructed and presented with modern design techniques, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation.

The A Art Space spans an impressive 7000 square meters, providing ample space for exhibitions, forums, and cultural exchange activities. It serves as a cultural and artistic hub, inviting people from all over the world to explore and appreciate the beauty of Tibetan culture.

The project, which started in October 2010 and was completed in December 2019, faced several challenges. The biggest challenge was to deconstruct Tibetan culture using an international design approach. With limited reference materials available, the design team took on the responsibility of exploring and expressing the contemporary essence of Tibetan culture.

This design project adopts an international design style and concept to express the ancient and mysterious Tibetan culture in an internationalist style. By incorporating elements of both Eastern Tibetan culture and Western internationalism, the project successfully achieves an international aesthetic expression of Tibetan culture in architecture.

The A Art Space has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2021. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

With its unique approach to showcasing Tibetan culture, the A Art Space stands as a testament to the beauty and significance of cultural exchange. It serves as a bridge between the ancient traditions of Tibet and the modern world, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the rich heritage of Lhasa.
